College professors releasing a survey report on the image of the police in Coimbatore on Thursday.Sterong action will be taken against police officers who refuse entry to poor people in police stations, ill-treat them, refuse to register their complaints and deny them First Information Reports, the Inspector-General of Police, West Zone, K. Rajendran, said here on Thursday. If such incidents were brought to notice, complainants will be rewarded with Rs. 500, he added.
Speaking at a seminar organised by the West Zone Police on “Human Rights, Non-Registration of Cases, Treating Poor People with Dignity and Image of the Police” as part of the DGPs Police Image Project, Mr.Rajendran said that even failure in investigations or failure to detect cases could be tolerated but refusal to register cases would be treated as an unpardonable offence.He promised that no disciplinary action would be initiated against officers if the number of cases pending investigations were on the rise. So far disciplinary action had been initiated against 39 officers. To assess the compliance level, a discreet survey was conducted and decoys were deployed with complaints in 277 police stations in the West Zone, he said. The survey was conducted among 11,453 people in seven districts. There were 33 questions. The respondents were chosen at random.He said that the number of police officers concealing complaints to show very less crime rate had come down drastically, according to the survey.
Mr.Rajendran said the West Zone had recorded the highest ever detection rate of 91 per cent (in 2006) and 89 per cent (till June in 2007) and recovery of 89 per cent (in 2006) and 93 per cent (till June 07). Head of Human Resource Development of Roots Industries Kavidasan presided over the function, Vice-Chancellor of Bharatiar University, G. Thiruvasagam delivered the key note address, Rotary District Chairman for Human Rights, R. Ramkutty spoke.The Deputy Inspector-Generals of Police, M.N. Manjunatha (Coimbatore), A.
