Avanashi road widening work started
Traffic on the already congested Avanashi Road during the peak hour is proving to be a nightmare for motorists thanks to the huge logs of trees, felled recently, lying on either side of the road.As part of the State Highways Department’s project to widen the 16-km long Avanashi Road from the flyover to Neelambur bypass into a six-lane one at Rs. 27 crore, highways officials and revenue authorities conducted a survey. To make space available for the widening work on either side of the road, they coordinated with the Electricity Board to shift the transformers and lamp posts to the road boundaries.
The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board, Corporation, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited and other private telephone service providers also removed utilities such as water lines and cables. The authorities also removed the encroachments on the road and awarded tenders to cut as many as 1,068 trees along the road. The contractors began felling the trees last Saturday and the work continued till Tuesday. The tree logs lying on either side of the road are causing traffic congestion during the peak hour. The city police have to deploy constables to regulate traffic. The contractors are said to be making arrangements to remove the logs.
However, the branches of trees and the bunch of leaves continue to occupy the road space making it difficult for the motorists. It remains to be seen whether the contractors will remove them or allow the Corporation to clear them.Officials said the contractors had been told to remove the logs after the peak hour traffic and that in the next 36 to 48 hours the logs would be removed.
