Coimbatore transport got 3000 new buses

Palanisamy (second right) flagging off a new bus service in the city on Sunday.The Coimbatore transport division got 3,000 new State-owned buses during the last financial year and 380 so far during the current year, Rural Industries Minister Pongalur N. Palanisamy, said here on Sunday.Inaugurating two bus routes, he said the State’s seven transport divisions operated 17,500 buses and the passenger traffic a day was 1.7 crore. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government introduced 7,000 buses in just a year since it came to power.
Despite the rise in fuel prices, Tamil Nadu was the only State whose buses charged very affordable rates from passengers. There was priority for improving road facilities and road links were provided to many areas.The Minister launched a bus service from Gandhipuram to Pappampatti and from Irugur to Edayarpalayam. Both services linked the suburbs with the city.Mr. Palanisamy said that Irugur was an important town panchayat along the Coimbatore Corporation’s border. It was included in the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.With a population of around 50,000, this town panchayat was among the key suburbs that needed to be developed in terms of infrastructure and transport link, the Minister said.Development works for about Rs.30 crore had been identified for this area, he said.
