A 20-year-old ailing male elephant died following a fatal fall on a rocky terrain at Tholampalayam in Periyanaickenpalayam range on the outskirts of Coimbatore City on Saturday.Following information about an ailing elephant struggling on a steep terrain, the District Forest Officer, I. Anwardeen, deputed a team of forest officials led by Forest Veterinarian, N.S. Manoharan and Range Officer, N. Panneerselvam to render medical aid to the elephant. The teams were deputed to see whether oral medication could be administered to the elephant.By the time the teams reached the place, the elephant while negotiating a steep slope fell on a rocky terrain sustaining injuries on its chest and head.Post mortem conducted on the elephant revealed that it had parasite loads on the intestinal tracts that probably led to the deterioration of the elephant’s health.
