Kovai CLASS plans model special centre
The Kovai Child Labour Abolition Support Society (Kovai CLASS) plans to develop a model special centre here to impart activity-based learning for rescued child workers. An official at the society said a training on “multi-grade multi-level approach” organised in Andhra Pradesh recently was attended by some of the officials of the society. They now planned to train the teachers of special centres in this subject.
Special centres function across the district to rehabilitate child workers rescued during raids. The children are trained in these centres for a year and then helped to join regular schools. The official said the Kovai CLASS planned to submit a project to the State Government to start three model centres in the district initially. The children would be involved in framing the curriculum and the syllabus would be selected from their living environment. They would be able to learn better since it was based on their subjects of interest.
However, such teaching would require special resource materials and the teachers should be trained. The society planned to identify teachers for three centres in the district initially, establish model centres this year and extend the project to other special centres in the District gradually. At least one centre was expected to take off in the district shortly, the official added.
