UDIS urged help from the public

UDIS Forum, a network that assists people with disabilities in the city, has urged the public to extend their support to people with disabilities.According to the officials of the forum, industrialists can provide jobs for the disabled in their industrial units. They could contact the forum and specify their requirements. The forum would find the people and train them in the necessary areas. It would work with the industry in addressing issues concerning the disabled employee and his or her skills.

Philanthropists could assist persons with disabilities to start their own enterprises. Though the disabled people have skills many of them do not have the financial assistance to start micro enterprises. The forum would assist the philanthropists in identifying and training young entrepreneurs, and follow up their performance.Even the general public could make the life of the disabled a little better. They could ask for products made by persons with disabilities in shops. This amount would go into the rehabilitation of these people.Parents of people with disabilities could contact the forum for guidance on education, employment and skill development of their children. Persons with disabilities could themselves approach the forum to empower them with various skills required for making themselves employable.

More than 90 persons with disabilities have been placed in jobs with the assistance of UDIS Forum. In a survey conducted by the forum amongst the disabled seeking a job in the city, it was found that a majority of them wanted to undergo computer training. It would also help the disabled in locating training programmes suitable for their needs. For instance, the Government Polytechnic College for Women was training candidates with disabilities in computer providing them a stipend of Rs.250. Currently, 10 candidates are undergoing job-training under the guidance of the forum. Orientation programmes are also held regularly for the benefit of people with disabilities and their parents. For details, contact S.Sekaran, Executive Director, Employment Counselling Centre, UDIS Forum, Mettupalayam Road.
