Osai objected to the uprooting of saplings
Osai, a Non-governmental organisation involved in environmental activities, has objected to the uprooting of saplings at Ganesh Nagar in Thudialur recently.K. Kalidas, Osai president, in a memorandum to the Collector said that his organisation had stopped cutting of more than 50 fully grown trees during the last year.Mr. Kalidas said that the department had planted saplings in residential areas where people were willing to water and nurture them. The afforestation drive was being carried out under the latest urban greening programme of the Forest Department. These saplings were planted in road boundaries without any disruption to water pipelines or overhead electric lines.
Saplings provided by the department and planted by residents were unilaterally removed by a contractor involved in road laying works. Such actions by contractors would defeat only the efforts of the Government and organisations involved in such greening works.Mr. Kalidas requested the District Collector to issue a stern warning that cutting of trees should not be carried out by people on their own without the permission from tahsildars.
