NTC mill modernisation by next month end

The National Textile Corporation (NTC) is hopeful of completing modernisation of its five mills in the State by the end of next month.According to an official of the corporation, the modernisation works are going on at a cost of nearly Rs. 75 crore. Tamil Nadu has eight NTC mills and modernisation works have been taken up in five of them.For two more, the regional office of the corporation here plans to seek modernisation funds.

For one more unit, it plans to take up complete renovation with modernisation of the unit and construction of new building. The official said this would be at a cost of nearly Rs. 20 crore and would be completed in two years.This mill, located in Coimbatore, had 42,000 spindles and employed 600 people. The modernisation programme would not affect its operation.Regular work would go on in the unit during this period.Orders had been placed for new machines. Its surplus land had been sold and the modernisation would improve its performance.
The NTC had identified 20 acres of surplus land at another unit – Coimbatore Spinning and Weaving Mills - here and this was likely to be sold as part of the revival programme.The corporation had eight mills in the state with totally 2.6 lakh spindles.As part of the NTC restructuring, the Coimbatore office was now the regional office and covered 16 mills located in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, the official added.
