One more protest for Salem Railway Division
A student attempted to set himself ablaze near the railway station here, demanding immediate inauguration of the Salem Railway division and also to include Coimbatore in it.The 25-year-old Paneerselvam, a student of the law college here, alighted from a bus with two cans full of kerosene at the Railway station. He immediately poured the kerosene on his body,shouting that the division be inaugurated immediately and also not to alter its jurisdiction as announced earlier, police said.However, police overpowered the youth, before he could light a matchstick and poured water on his body.Meanwhile, a group of 10 Law college students here have started an indefinite fast this morning demanding that the division be inaugurated.Kerala and Tamil Nadu are locked in a tussle over formation of the Salem rail division.Kerala has made it clear that it was not against creation of a new Railway division with Salem in Tamil Nadu as it headquarters but was opposed to bifurcation of Palakkad division, one of the oldest and profitable ones, for the purpose.
