To help reduce road accidents and create awareness among people on road safety, a city hospital, with the assistance of Rotary Clubs, has formed a multi-pronged 'People's Movement Against Road Accidents'.The movement 'UYIR' (Life), to be launched on September 5 here, would involve youth, students, public and government machinery to save lives, Dr S Rajasekaran, director, Department of Orthopaedic and Spine Surgery, Ganga Hospital, told reporters here today.
A joint venture with 19 Rotary Clubs of Coimbatore, UYIR has charted out strategies to reduce mortality and morbidity due to road accidents, the important ones being traffic rules awareness programme for schoolchildren, teachers, students, police, transport and corporation officials, home guards, corporate houses, auto drivers and drivers of public transport, he said.More than 10,000 citizens would be trained every year in First Aid, so that lives of the victims could be saved by attending to them or bringing to hospitals immediately.
Stating that the movement would also create 'Ganga-Rotary Trauma Corps, to help the administration prevent mishaps, he said GTC would be the point of contact between UYIR and the common man. GTC volunteers would allot available time to promote 'zero mortality to Trauma,' he said.Peripheral centres would be set up on highways to provide immediate aid to victims and transport them free in the ambulance, having paramedical people, to an appropriate hospital, Rajasekaran said.
