A 24-year-old Taekwondo player, who underwent a surgery for a major ligament injury a year ago, has managed to bag a gold medal at a state-level event held here recently.Sathya of Coimbatore had sustained an injury in the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) on her right knee during a practice session two years ago.She consulted Velasamy Ravendran, Chief Orthopaedic Surgeon, Richmond Hospital in the city.According to the doctor, she had suffered a 100 percent rupture of the ACL which was the main ligament of the knee joint.
She was discharged after spending five days in the hospital a year ago.Sathya, who resumed vigorous training six months after the surgery, triumphed by winning the gold medal at the State-level meet.“She is all set to compete in the National-level meet which will be held in Nagaland shortly,’’ Velasamy Ravendran saidAccording to him, only 15 to 30 percent of the people who had sustained similar injuries were rehabilitated, so as to return to sports at the national or international level.“Knee re-construction surgery is, however, very advanced now. If performed without delay, the sportspersons can resume their career and come out successful,’’ he added.
