Valankulam flyover will completed in five to six weeks
The construction of the flyover across the railway line on Sungam Bypass Road will be completed in five to six weeks, District Collector Neeraj Mittal has said. Also known as Valankulam flyover because of the road running along the Valankulam Tank, this is a much-awaited facility that offers the prospect of decongesting Tiruchi Road, Big Bazaar Street, Oppanakara Street and a part of the Palakkad Main Road.
The bypass road had enabled vehicles from and to Kerala to avoid the main roads. Those bound for Kerala from the eastern parts of the city or districts east of Coimbatore had taken a diversion at the Sungam Junction to reach the Palakkad Main Road near the Ukkadam Bus Stand.A railway gate, however, held up traffic. The flyover had been mooted to overcome this bottleneck. But, the work that began four years ago was yet to be completed. The Collector reviewed the work being carried out by the railways on Monday. These were expected to be over in two to three weeks. Then, opening a section of the flyover to traffic could be considered. But, in about six weeks, the entire work would be completed. The Public Works Department would provide lights on the Ondipudur flyover at Rs.37 lakh and on Valankulam flyover at Rs.28 lakh. State Highways officials were present during the review, a press release from the district administration said.
