35 convicts walked free
Thirty-five convicts in the 1998 Coimbatore serial blasts who received sentences ranging from three to five years on Monday walked free after the special court said it was counting the years they spent in jail during the trial. Judge K Uthirapathy, who had sentenced 41 people and acquitted People's Democratic Party leader in Kerala, Abdul Nazar Madani, earlier, is yet to pronounce his judgment on 70 others including Al Umma founder SA Basha, who is guilty of criminal conspiracy and murder. Monday's verdict was given amid tight security. The accused were facing jail terms for attempt to murder, rioting, arson and possession of explosives. Twelve other accused who are facing similar charges will be sentenced on October 15, the judge said. In the earlier judgment in September too, the judge had ordered the release of the convicts as they had already spent the period of their sentences as undertrials. In August, the judge had held 158 people guilty for their involvement in the blasts, which killed 58 people and injured over 200. Senior BJP leader LK Advani was the target of the terrorists.
