BU to introduce shift system

The Bharathiar University proposes to introduce shift system in colleges from the next academic year, G. Thiruvasagam, Vice-Chancellor, said here on Thursday.Speaking to reporters, he said that the introduction of shift system in colleges would result in an increase in the number of students attending colleges.The thrust was on making higher education more accessible to students at the workshop conducted by the University Grants Commission (UGC), Ministry of Human Resource Development and the Central Planning Commission, in New Delhi on the development of higher education, Dr. Thiruvasagam said.

With the introduction of shift system, the student strength in colleges, especially in areas such as Valparai and Gudalur, would double, he added.Also, the university would keep a watch on self-financing colleges to ensure that students from the SC/ST category are given admission.Government and Government-aided colleges too would be given job-oriented courses.A workshop would be held in November, which would be attended officials from the Planning Commission, Ministry of Human Resource Development and the UGC to discuss the strategies to implement this, he said. It would be attended by student representatives, teachers, principals and secretaries of colleges.
