Building collapse at Ukkadam
Rescueare on at the spot where flats of a Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB) block collapsed at Ukkadam in Coimbatore on Friday.Twelve persons were killed and 12 others were rescued when a block with 24 flats of a Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board on Vincent Road at Ukkadam in the city collapsed on Friday evening. Heavy rain over the last three days is said to have triggered the collapse of the already weak building.The incident occurred even as the district administration authorities were evacuating the occupants in view of the risk posed by weak structure. Rescue and relief operations by the Rapid Action Force personnel and Fire and Rescue Services Department, along with volunteers from nearby areas, were hampered by a heavy downpour.Revenue Minister I. Periasami, Rural Industries Minister Pongalur N. Palanisamy, Collector Neeraj Mittal and Mayor R. Venkatachalam visited the spot. Mr. Venkatachalam said corporation schools had been kept open for those living in other TNSCB houses.
