Nagarathar Sangam's function

Former Supreme Court Judge and Chairman of the Law Commission of India Justice A. R. Lakshmanan (second left) at a function organised by Nagarathar Sangham on Thursday to felicitate him.“Post of the Chairman of Law Commission of India was not an honour bestowed on my individual capacity but on the entire Tamil race,” observed former judge of the Supreme Court, Justice A.R. Lakshmanan. Mr. Lakshmanan was delivering his speech of acceptance at a function organised by the Kovai Nagarathar Sangham to felicitate him on his assumption office as Chairman of the Law Commission of India.

Taking a trip down the memory lane, Justice Lakshmanan said after graduation he took a job in a leading bank and later became a lawyer.“As a judge I had served in Chennai, Kerala, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh for nearly 18 years,” he said.In the last 18 years of service as a judge, he said he had disposed of 98,416 cases in which 36,000 cases during his tenure in Chennai. “I was preparing to spend the retired life in Tamil Nadu,” Justice Lakshmanan said.On superannuation, Mr. Lakshmanan said, he was offered postings in the diplomatic service, on the Director Board of Taxations and then as the Chairman of the Law Commission of India. “On consultation with well-wishers and friends, I chose to take up the post of the Law Commission Chairman.”


He said in 1955 P.L. Venkatarama Iyer from the state became the Chairman of the Law Commission and he was the second person from Tamil Nadu to hold the post. “Such a rare honour was not for the individual but for the entire State,”, he said.Earlier, Chairman of Bannari Amman Sugars S.V. Balasubramanian, Chairman of KG Hospitals G. Bhaktavatchalam, K.S. Manian, S.P. V R. Subbiah and others offered felicitations. Advocate T. Ramalingam of Chennai delivered a lecture on Tamil and Justice. Kavingar Sellaganapathy welcomed the gathering and Secretary RM. Senthilnathan proposed a vote of thanks.
