The City Police Commissioner, C.K. Gandhirajan, has advised shopkeepers and owners of commercial establishments to refrain from breaking pumpkins on the middle of the road. With Navarathri festival around, shopkeepers and those running commercial establishments as a part of their religious ritual used to break pumpkins on the road while closing and opening the shops. The broken pumpkins used to endanger the safety of motorists especially the two-wheeler riders and auto-rickshaws. The pumpkins used to skid the vehicles with a smaller wheels (i.e. diameter). Police officers said that if merchants failed to cooperate, the police would have to register cases for carelessness endangering the safety of others.
