He was inaugurating the Science and Humanities Association at the RVS College of Engineering and Technology at Sulur.He said nearly 4.5 lakh students passed out of engineering colleges in the country every year and just 25 to 30 per cent of them were employable.Two factors that determined their employability were technical and soft skills. Technical skills would mean the ability to apply the technical knowledge gained.The students should provide value-addition to the subjects learned and this demanded moulding from the first year.
On soft skills, he said that communication, presentation and organising skills should be developed from the first year.Mr. Parthasarathy urged the students to do small projects in every subject since it would enable them to work as a team. They should also focus on expanding their knowledge base by reading regularly.He explained that Information Technology companies had clients from different industrial sectors.Hence, it needed personnel who had knowledge in different sectors such as petroleum, electrical or electronics. “Placement in a company is only a beginning.” Students should have a larger vision, he said.K.
