Students chapter inagurated at Sri Shakthi Institute
“There is an immediate need to make the present education system value-based and research-oriented in the globalised environment,” K. Sourirajan, Chairman, Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE), Tamil Nadu, said here on Saturday.Inaugurating the student chapter of the society at Sri Shakthi Institute of Engineering and Technology, he said globalisation had made its impact on the political and socio-economic scenario and had opened up the country’s economy to global players with improved quality and focus on customer satisfaction.
He pointed out that a team of highly motivated and meticulously trained work force was behind the success of the new generation of industries and service sectors.“We have to realise that the need of the hour is to impart and nurture skill and practical-based technical education supported by a strong research-oriented approach. It is also essential that we build fundamental traits of character like honesty, compassion, courage, persistence and responsibility”, Mr. Sourirajan said.R. Radhakrishnan, Vice-Chancellor, Anna University, Coimbatore, said that students should concentrate on engaging themselves in the development of indigenous technology. They should get involved in development activities. They could begin this on a small-scale like repair of mobile phones and other hand-held gadgets.
“Students are poor in communication skills. Training in spoken English should begin from the first year of engineering. The number of students using the library is a mere 10 per cent. This should increase considerably,” he said.S. Thangavelu, Chairman of the institute, said that only research and development activities would take a country to great heights of economic prosperity. There should be facilities for more candidates to do Ph. D.
