Yathra for a good reason

Bharathiar University Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam will start his ‘Knowledge Resource Mobilisation Yatra’ from October 17. Mr. Thiruvasagam will visit an arts and science college and a B. Ed. college on that day along with a team from the university.“The team will consist of the Controller of Examinations, dean, research deans, physical director and the librarian. We will spend four hours in each college. This is not an inspection, but an interaction to sort out long-pending issues,” Dr. Thiruvasagam told.

He said it was the first time in the country such a system was introduced. The purpose was not to find fault, but to find ways to improve. Arts and science colleges which had completed five years and B.Ed. colleges which had completed a year would come under the purview of the yatra. The colleges would be given a week’s notice before the visit of the team, the Vice-Chancellor added. While the team members will visit their respective departments, the Vice-Chancellor will meet the faculty with a five-pronged objective. “I will discuss how to double the entry point of students, how to enhance the quality of education, remind them of their responsibility in effectively preparing a good syllabus, discuss ways to bring down the discrepancies in validation, and last but not the least, how to use effective teaching methodologies,” Mr. Thiruvasagam said.

Teachers who have guided students to obtain Ph.D. and those who have themselves gained Ph.Ds will be honoured. He will then meet the students and learn their requirements with regard to the changes they would like to be incorporated in the syllabus. They will also be told of the importance of pursuing a parallel diploma course along with the degree course. Meritorious students will be recognised.“When my team finishes with its observations, the findings will be consolidated. On the basis of the fact-finding report I will address the grievances and come to a consensus to improve the system in the college,” said the Vice-Chancellor.
