Efforts on to ensure a crime-free Diwali

Crime prevention measures have been stepped up in shopping areas to prevent criminals from exploiting the heavy rush for bag lifting, two-wheeler lifting and chain snatching, said City Police Commissioner C.K. Gandhirajan. Mr. Gandhirajan elaborating the arrangements made in the shopping areas exhorted the shop keepers and the public to keep vigil to prevent crimes.He said the supplementary efforts from the shop keepers and the public were of paramount importance to ensure a crime-free shopping experience.

The security arrangements are being supervised by Deputy Commissioners of Police (Crime) P. Nagarajan and P. Sugumaran (Law and Order).Ten teams of policemen in plain clothes each, led by sub inspectors and inspectors, would maintain vigil in shopping areas with the photographs of the habitual offenders and wanted accused.More than 100 policemen would be on patrol duty in busy shopping areas.The police have installed speed-dome cameras at Cross Cut Road, Oppanakkara Street, Raja Street, on DB Road and Nawab Hakkim Road. These cameras would enable the police to locate criminals easily in the event of offence.In the last ten-days, the police have secured more than 30 pocket pickers to prevent offences in shopping areas. The police have deployed 24 jeeps, 31 motorcycles and 30 bi-cycle for patrols.


Watch towers have been installed at five places such as Cross Cut Road, 100 feet Road, Oppanakkara Street and Raja Street. In addition, public address systems have also been installed to caution the public on the safety of their belongings and valuables.Steps have been taken to deploy constables in plain clothes on crowded town buses. Commissioner asked the public to be vigilant when they carry cash or valuables. In the event of suspicious persons, public and shopkeepers should come forward to inform the police at phone number 100.
