Latest aortic aneurysm at GKNM

As many as five patients will undergo the latest, less invasive, catheter-based technique for an aortic aneurysm, which is an abnormal dilation of a blood vessel, at the G Kuppusamy Naidu Memorial Hospital (GKNM) where the two-day tenth Annual Live Workshop on Aortic Aneurysms got underway here on Saturday. When compared to surgery, the more expensive non-operative procedure was being used by doctors in developed countries for the last few years. The rupture of a blood vessel due to an abnormal dilation could prove fatal. Surgery was not usually carried out for an aneurysm since it involved risk and required sophisticated equipment. According to Dr S Muralidharan, chief cardio-thoracic surgeon of the hospital, only a few centres in the country could carry out this procedure with consistent success.“We have assembled leading surgeons to demonstrate the technical nuances of this procedure for the benefit of trainee surgeons,” he added. Aneurysms were 67 prevalent among the cases of heart ailments. Individuals who had problems with blood pressure, blood vessels and age-related weakness, were more prone to an aneurysm.Three cases were reported at the GKNM Hospital out of a total 100 operative cases every month, Muralidharan pointed out.
