Development works for Rs. 3.42 crore can be taken up in urban and rural areas of the district under the State Government’s Namakku Naame scheme. The outlay includes a one-third contribution from the beneficiary public. The scheme envisages the provision of infrastructure such as hospitals and health centres.A press release from District Collector Neeraj Mittal here has said the district had been allocated more than Rs. 2.50 crore by the Government for various works to be carried out in 2007-08.The public contribution would work out to more than Rs. 85 lakh.Under the scheme, the funds could be used to construct various structures including laboratories and toilets in schools run by the Government and local bodies.Furniture, computer and other study material could also be bought.

The funds could also be used for constructing compound walls or for putting up a fence around the schools.Hospitals, primary health centres, sub-centres, veterinary hospitals, libraries, hostels, nutrition meal centres and fair price shops could also be built, the release said.Improvements to roads, construction of bridges and culverts and creation of drinking water resources, parks and playgrounds and installation of streetlights could be done by using the funds. The press release, however, said that the funds under this scheme could not be used to carry out all those works (including the removal of silt) that could not be carried out using the MLA’s constituency development fund. Individuals from the public, residents’ groups, organisations and even companies could submit to the district administration petitions requesting for these works.

One-third of cost of the works should be sent in the form of a demand draft drawn in favour of “District Collector’s Namakku Naame Thittam Fund.”The draft could be sent along with the petition. The entire process of implementation, including the invitation of tenders, would be done in a transparent manner, the release said.
