Coimbatore – Nagercoil overnight express train

The Divisional Railway Manager, Salem, R. Mohan, on Wednesday told newspersons that the Coimbatore – Nagercoil overnight express train would be introduced by January 2008.He dismissed reports about the Rs. 42 crore allocated for the Coimbatore North Junction – Irugur line doubling work being diverted for other purposes. Land acquisition and other hitches that delayed the work had been overcome and expressed confidence that the same would be completed by 2008.

He said that the Coimbatore – Podanur railway line doubling work would be completed by 2008 end. This would help in avoiding a situation of some of the important trains skipping Coimbatore Junction proceeding to Irugur from Podanur. Given the density of 16,000 passengers per day at the Coimbatore Junction, the railway administration was contemplating on operating a few more passenger trains to Erode and Mettuppalayam from Coimbatore in addition to the existing services so as to ease the pressure on roads. The division has also mooted a proposal to the administration for operating overnight direct express trains to Bangalore and Tirupati. He also inspected the ongoing works at the Coimbatore Railway Junction.
