MSME Expo 2007 started

Minister for Rural Industries Pongalur N. Palanisamy (second right) at the inauguration of the MSME Expo 2007 in the city on Thursday.The Tamil Nadu Small Industries Development Corporation (SIDCO) plans to develop about 20 more industrial estates in the State in three years, according to Rural Industries Minister Pongalur N. Palanisamy.Inaugurating the Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Expo 2007 here on Thursday, he said that the State had 78 industrial estates. The number would go up to 100 in three years. Multi-storeyed industrial estates were planned in three locations in Chennai. The State had 142 clusters and of this, 15 had been identified for development.

An industrial policy for micro, small and medium scale units would be announced in a month by the Chief Minister. Issues such as what kind of support was needed for industrial growth and the best features in the industrial policies of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka were studied to be incorporated in the policy.The Chairman and Managing Director of SIDCO, D. Rajendran, said that land had been identified for industrial estates in Kancheepuram, Krishnagiri, Villupuram, Perambalur, Namakkal and Coimbatore districts. In Coimbatore, efforts to establish an industrial estate for women entrepreneurs had been revived.

In Madurai, Erode, Tiruvanamallai and Vellore districts, land would be identified to establish such estates.A sector-specific special economic zone for knitwear and textiles had been planned near Tirupur on 250 acres, he said.Further, potential sectors for cluster development would be identified soon and these would be encouraged to set up units in the estates. And, the units coming up at the industrial estates would also get benefits under the composite term loan scheme. Under this they would be eligible for collateral-free loan to the extent of Rs. 25 lakh for land, building, machinery and working capital.

President of the Coimbatore District Small Industries Association, C. Muthusami, Deputy General Manager of Indian Bank P.N. Patel and the Deputy General Manager of SIDBI, Coimbatore, P. Raveendra Das, and the Director of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Institute, Chennai, S. Sivagnanam, spoke.The four-day exhibition on VOC Park grounds aimed at creating market for the products of micro and small industries, giving technology exposure to these units and creating awareness on financial products.
