Earlier, people sympathised with them. Today, the entire world agreed that they were entitled to their due rights.

“The words ‘We the people’ in our Constitution include the disabled,” he said. The Government had many schemes for them. Mr. Patil also stressed ethics in the field of medicine even as treatment improved with technology.

Mr. Patil told the hospital that the commission would support any initiative of the newly formed group to hold national-level programmes for hand injury victims. All organs of the body were equally important. But, the hand had greater number of functions, he said to emphasise the need for such an initiative.Presiding over the launch, president of the Indian Society for Surgery of the Hand B.A. Anantharam said the concern among hand reconstruction surgeons for the patients could be a rights issue in terms of preventing accidents that resulted in the loss of limbs.Fatigue and overworking because of financial problems could be one of the reasons for hand injuries, he pointed out. The support group itself was a new paradigm in the field of hand surgery, especially the rehabilitation component.

Chairman of the hospital J.G. Shanmughanathan said the support group was yet another community service of his establishment. The others included ‘Save the Working Hand’ project to prevent hand injuries in industrial accidents and ‘Uyir’, to prevent road accidents. Two hand injury victims – R. Srinivasan and P.K. Biju – narrated how they overcame the injuries to lead a normal life.Head of the Department of Plastic, Hand and Micro Surgery, S. Rajasabapathy explained the objectives behind the forming of the group. Head of the Department of Orthopaedics and Spine Surgery S. Rajasekaran said words of confidence from persons like Mr. Srinivasan and Mr. Biju would have a greater impact than those from the doctors.
