NGO silently doing service

A volunteer of Sevalayam attends on a destitute in Coimbatore on Sunday.A non-Governmental organisation at Peelamedu has been silently doing service to the destitute in Coimbatore city for the last seven years. The volunteers of Sevalayam gather people who beg on roadsides or wander about the streets, give them a good hair cut and a bath. “Most of them are mentally challenged,” says B. Sam, founder of Sevalayam. Medicines and clothes are also provided to them. The volunteers clean the open wounds and bandage them. The same exercise is carried out twice every week at all parts of Coimbatore and outside the district. The organisation has also rehabilitated 247 street children by giving them small businesses that they can carry out on their own as tea vendors and book sellers. An orphanage set up by Sevalayam has about 40 children and a few elders. Aged parents who are abandoned in hospitals are also taken care of, says Mr. Sam. Sevalayam can be contacted at 9894043063.
