Police recovered 420 sovereigns of gold jewellery

Rajendran (second left) taking a look at the recovered jewellery on Friday.Coimbatore Rural District Police on Friday achieved a significant breakthrough in a series of crime cases which led to the arrest of five persons. The police recovered 420 sovereigns of gold jewellery worth Rs. 40 lakh from one gang and 90 sovereigns from another.The Inspector-General of Police, West Zone, K. Rajendran, on Friday told reporters that the special teams probed a case relating to the murder of a jewellery shop owner and theft of 60 sovereigns of jewellery. Deenadayala Pandurangan was stabbed to death at his shop in Perumanallur by a two-member gang on December 23, 2005.

The teams on December 5 nabbed Manikandan and based on his confession arrested his accomplice Pughazhendi and recovered the stolen jewellery and the motorcycle used by them.The recovery also included 30 sovereigns of jewellery looted by the duo at Velliangadu and Madurai.The special teams that probed the cases of daylight house breaking in residential areas on the suburbs nabbed Rajkumar of Dindigual near Vedapatti. Interrogations revealed that he along with Manikandan and Prakash staying in a rented house near Tirupur used to break into locked houses during the day. The gang was involved in over 29 cases of house break during day looting 410 sovereigns of jewellery. The teams arrested the remaining two accused when they attempted a robbery near Vadavalli bus stand. They were remanded in custody.
