Seven hurt as tree falls on houses
Mayor R. Venkatachalam talking to the people whose houses were damaged at a colony near Ukkadam in the city on Monday.Seven persons were injured when a tree fell on three houses in a colony of the Coimbatore Corporation’s conservancy workers near Ukkadam around 3 a.m. on Monday. The injuries were said to be minor.The injured were admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. Mayor R. Venkatachalam visited the spot along with Corporation South Zone Chairman P. Pynthamil. The Mayor said the residents wanted better living conditions, including safe houses.Mr. Venkatachalam told them that the Corporation is implementing a housing scheme for the urban poor under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. “The houses that were damaged were more than 50 years old and the roads in the colony were so narrow that a wall had to be demolished to enable a crane to go in and remove the tree,” he said.The Mayor told the people that 30 feet wide roads would be laid when the new tenements were built.“I told them that there should be no encroachments on the road and that unauthorised houses should not come up around the tenements,” he said.
