Corp passed resolution to take over tanks
The Coimbatore Corporation Council passed on Monday a special resolution to demand measures to enable it to take over eight tanks in the city that were now under the control of the Public Works Department (PWD).This followed Minister for Public Works Durai Murugan’s statement here on Saturday that the PWD could not hand over the tanks to the Corporation as the civic body did not have the expertise to maintain the water bodies. The Corporation wanted to take over the tanks as it had drawn up a project for their rejuvenation under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.
The resolution, moved by Leader of the Opposition V.N. Udayakumar, said that the Corporation Council had resolved at its meeting on February 2 last year to request for the takeover. When members of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), Communist Party of India (CPI) and Communist Party of India (Marxist) asked what the Corporation would do, Mayor R. Venkatachalam said that a fresh appeal would be made to the Government. “We will meet the Minister (Mr. Durai Murugan) also,” he said. Some of the members wondered whether the takeover would be possible. The Corporation should have discussed the possibilities first in the Council before drawing up a project for Rs.127 crore, they said. What the Corporation faced now was a result of its unilateral approach.
