Eye donor honoured
Six eye donors from Coimbatore were posthumously honoured by Parasparam Vision Donors’ Club here recently.R.Chakravarthy, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Crime Branch, CID, the chief guest, handed over mementos to the relatives of the donors and pledged to donate his eyes.A lecture and slide show on “The Why and How of Eye Donation” were presented by A.Srinivasan of Madurai Eye Centre.
Few people volunteered to donate their eyes, he said. Donated eyes could cure vision loss caused by industrial injury, burns and corneal abscess. Eveyone, except those afflicted by HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and corneal cancer, could donate their eyes, he added.Eyes had to be removed within six hours of death by a qualified doctor, Dr.Srinivasan said.The Parasparam Vision Donors’ Club, formed to mobilise the members of the public to donate their eyes, had a target of 2008 donations in the year 2008.
