Child labour resuced

Officials of the Labour Department and the Kovai Child Labour Abolition Support Society (Kovai CLASS) rescued seven child workers during raids here on Wednesday.They were conducted on 159 establishments, including eateries, hotels and bakeries, authorities said. They warned establishments of strict action if they were found employing child labourers.

The boys, aged between 12 and 15 years, hail from districts such as Ramanathapuram, Pudukottai, besides Madurai, Thanjavur and Cuddalore. Their parents, who have been informed, are expected to arrive on Thursday. Authorities said the children would be sent to Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan schools in the respective districts.On directions from Collector Neeraj Mittal, a team was constituted to conduct a crack down on employment of child labourers. It comprised Inspector of Labour S. Ponnusamy, Deputy Inspectors of Labour V. Balasubramanian, G. Muthuvel and N. Leelavathy, besides Kovai CLASS field officers P. Kathirvel and R. Kumaravel.
