Dont waste drinking water - Corp's advice

More buildings, more house and commercial connections and dipping storage level in the Siruvani Dam are pushing the Coimbatore Corporation to advice judicious use of drinking water. While water managers in the civic body have maintained since the halt of the monsoon that the storage is comfortable enough to avoid scarcity till June, the start of the summer is marked by such claims being avoided. No panic button is being pressed. But, at the same time, concern is discernible from the advice for judicious use.

According to the Corporation, the level was 52.93 ft on Wednesday, as against the full reservoir level of 67.44 ft. It had dipped from 53.13 on Tuesday. This is the fourth consecutive year of the level being maintained at 52 to 55 ft (see table) in mid-February.Monsoon failure had brought the level down to 25 ft in the corresponding period in 2004. Good monsoon from that year ensured scarcity-free summers till now. But, the Corporation advises caution. Though the same level is maintained, the number of people using Siruvani water in the city and the peripheral areas is rising fast.
