IMS Quotient 2008
Quiz master Anand Sharma shooting posers at the contestants of the IMS Quotient 2008 organised in Coimbatore on Saturday.It was an edge-of-the-seat thriller buzzer round that finally narrowed down the three city finalists of the ‘IMS Quotient 2008’ quiz contest conducted by IMS Learning Resources Private Limited here on Saturday.The third edition of the contest, aimed at identifying the three smartest collegians in 32 cities across the country, was here for identifying the local team to be sent to the semi-final. The afternoon started off with the first round – the Elimination Round – of written tests. Nearly 200 teams of three students each from colleges from Coimbatore, Erode, Tiruchengode, Coonoor, Pollachi, Udumalpet and Madurai took part with enthusiasm. They were tested in history, current affairs, music, movies, general knowledge, etc., through questions that were fired rapidly.Six teams of three participants each were short-listed then. As they made it to the stage to fight it out for the semi-final position, the other students made a keen audience to the posers from Anand Sharma, Regional Manager, IMS, Bangalore, who was the quiz master.The teams were: one each from Coimbatore Institute of Technology, Kumaraguru College of Technology (KCT), Government College of Technology (GCT) and Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham and two from PSG College of Technology. The quiz had four rounds to test the contestants’ skills in various areas. Audio and video clippings formed part of the questions, in addition to the verbal posers.
The EducationPlus Knowledge Round had 15 questions covering general knowledge, music, movies, English literature, etc. The audio and video-based questions involved identifying voices of the artistes and the vocalists. “What is the Sanskrit word to depict free from mind or instrument of thought?” The answer came from the audience – “mantra”. At the end of the first round, it was the team from KCT that was in the lead with CIT close on its heels.The second “Who Am I ?” round was dominated by the audience. Out of the six personalities, five were identified by the audience, who bagged prizes.The third was a general round. There were many interesting questions. Sample this: In the Lok Sabha, three seats are traditionally kept vacant – why? CIT team got the right answer: “The three seats belong to the candidates from Pakistan occupied Kashmir.” The third round saw the Amrita team in the lead, closely followed by GCT.The fourth and last round which was the buzzer round saw the GCT team emerge winners, pushing Amrita to the second place. KCT got the third place. Two questions worth mentioning – the gadget of the year is the iPhone. Shoulder surfing is surfing the Net over somebody’s shoulder.
The city winners – K.R. Venkatesh, S. Ramamoorthi and V. Nambirajan – get a free trip to Goa to participate in the quarter-final. The semi-final and national final will be held at The National University of Singapore, a business education school. The event was co-sponsored by The Hindu EducationPlus and Welingkar.
