Removal of water hyacinth from Singanallur tank begins
Corporation officials have embarked on a drive to remove water hyacinth from the Singanallur tank. The Corporation authorities have commenced a drive to remove water hyacinth from the Singanallur tank that had been playing spoilsport with the boating facility there.The Singanallur lake was turned into a boating yard for providing an avenue of recreation for the entertainment-starved citizens of Coimbatore.But ever since the boat club came into existence there, water hyacinth had been derailing the boating activity, disappointing the people of Coimbatore.The Corporation authorities used to remove the hyacinth at frequent intervals and boating used to resume but would only last for a few months.
Following directions from the Mayor R. Venkatachalam and Corporation Commissioner, P. Muthuveeran, the officials have deployed earth mover machines and man power for removing the hyacinth from the lake surface.The focus is on the nearly 90 acre water spread area that stretches from the Tiruchi Road to the railway track.On Friday, Assistant Commissioner (Revenue), R. Prabhakaran and Executive Engineer, A. Lakshmanan visited the tank.The officials have deployed three earthmovers this time from three different angles and using a motorised instrument, a net is being spread over the water hyacinth in the water spread area and using a motor the plants are being removed.Corporation sources said that the work estimated to cost close to Rs. 5 lakh would take nearly a month.The objective would be to keep the lake clean for ensuring a smooth ride for the boats before the summer vacation sets in.
