Wildlife census - By Forest dept

The Forest Department, Coimbatore, will conduct a census to enumerate the wildlife population on March 1 and 2.District Forest Officer I. Anwardeen will be coordinating the drive with the guidance of Conservator of Forest, Coimbatore Circle, R. Kannan.The department has invited the participation of nature lovers, conservation movement activists, college students, non-governmental organisations and the public.Participants should be above 18 years of age and they should register their names with the District Forest Office on Tiruchi Road in person on or before February 15. The census will be to enumerate the population of the wildlife species in six ranges spread over 694 sq km area of the Coimbatore division.According to the officials, the census will help identify the habitats, habitat conditions, presence of the species, age group, sex ratio and the demographic profile.The data will help forest authorities formulate the wildlife and forest management plans.The data would also help ascertaining the changing habitats and then plan habitat improvement programmes and initiate preventive measures to avoid man-animal conflict situations, the officials said.
