Bold Student

Police constable here was suspended for his misdemeanour with a law college student in a private bus here on Thursday. It has been stated that S Jazmirsha (20), son of S Sahabuddin of Appa Nagar East, Mettupalayam and a first year student of Government Law College, was travelling back home on Thursday afternoon in a private bus when an elderly woman along with a toddler boarded the bus at Thoppampatti Pirivu. He got up to offer them a seat, when the driver applied sudden brake at a turning.

Jasmirsha lost his balance and fell on a person who happened to be a constable in mufti. The constable Krishnan, attached to Rathnapuri (B15) police station, got wild and picked a quarrel with him. He slapped Jazmirsha and also assaulted him. During the assault, Jazmirsha's shirt tore and his identity card was torn to pieces by Krishnan, said sources. On getting down at Mettupalayam, Jazmirsha filed a case against Krishnan and later, got himself admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.

Though the Mettupalayam police gave him a ‘case acceptance receipt', they went to his house and threatened his parents to withdraw the complaint. Following this, the law college students, under the leadership of their representative M Mahendran, a final year student, staged a picketing and road-roko in front of their campus on Friday morning. Seventy-eight students conducted an agitation in front of the SP office. They also gave a petition to the District Collector. SP G Karthikeyan conducted a preliminary inquiry and forwarded the case to the city police, who in turn directed Thudiyalur Police to file an FIR.

Thudiyalur SI Jaya Pandian is investigating the case. Meanwhile, sources said Krishnan has been suspended till the inquiry ends. Though fights between law college students and police were common in Chennai, Madurai and Salem, this was the first such incident in Coimbatore. Student representative M Mahendran told this website's News paper that they wanted the incident to be the last between the police and law college students in the city. "Though fight between law college students and police is happening for the first time in Coimbatore, we want it to be the last such incident in the state. If not, we will go on an indefinite strike from Monday with the support from college students from all over Tamil Nadu," he said.
