Revised wages for planters

The Nilgiri Planters’ Association and plantation trade unions have arrived at an agreement for revised wages for plantation workers in the Nilgiris.A release from the Planters’ Association of Tamil Nadu said that according to the new settlement, the workers would be paid Rs. 90 a day. This would include Rs. 86 as the daily wage and Rs. 4 towards “terrain allowance”.

12,000 workers would benefit from the three-year settlement

The settlement also included a “price linked bonus” at the rate of seven paise for every rupee increase in the average sale price of tea produced in Tamil Nadu in excess of Rs. 50 a kg sold in the auction centres of Coonoor, Coimbatore and Kochi.About 12,000 workers would benefit from the three-year settlement, effective from January 1, 2008, the release said.
