Smuggled Liquor Seized

A police officer looking at the liquor bottles smuggled from Goa seized by the City Prohibition Enforcement Wing personnel in an operation on Saturday night. Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) police personnel from Coimbatore City Police on Saturday night arrested a person and seized 156 bottles of excise duty evaded liquor bottles smuggled from Kerala.

On instructions from Commissioner of Police, K.C. Mahali and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), S. Rajendran, the police stepped up drive across the city to combat prohibition related offences. Under the direct supervision of Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police V. Rathinasabapathy and Assistant Commissioner of Police K. Sunderraj vehicle checks were conducted across the city and one of the teams led by Inspector Arumugam intercepted Shyam Prasad (33) of Pappanaickenpudur on Lawley Road in R.S. Puram. He was found in possession of 12 excise duty evaded liquor bottles from Goa.

Based on interrogation, the teams raided his house and found nearly 144 bottles of liquor concealed in aluminium tins. Interrogations revealed that liquor sold at cheap rate in Goa used to be smuggled across to Calicut by rail. From there the accused reportedly sourced them to Coimbatore. It is learnt that the bottles purchased at Rs. 70 to Rs. 90 used to be sold at a 100 per cent premium.
