“People need to be educated about the patent filing process. The significance of intellectual property and patents needs to be highlighted and the process of searching and applying for a patent should be made easy to encourage more people to file,” the Vice-Chancellor said. He said India ranked third among the developing countries with 686 patent applications in 2006. Of the applications originated in India, Maharashtra accounted for the maximum number, followed by Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat.

Explaining the process of filing a patent, he said it fell under the jurisdiction of the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks. The world’s largest patent applicants were from the United State of America, Japan and Germany. Together these three countries accounted for 57 per cent of the worldwide patent filings. S.
