K.Mohammed Ashiq, a Class IX student, in Coimbatore.Mohammed Ashiq has a passion for making figurines out of the most unlikely of materials.He has experimented with turmeric, paper, thread, glass powder, rice and even rubber. This time, he has made a statuette of freedom fighter Veerapandiya Kattabomman out of melted candles.

Ashiq has used five different colours for his little wax sculpture - pink, fluorescent, red, black and white.“Photographs of Kattabomman are not easily available. In History textbooks, one can find only very small pictures of him,” says Ashiq.He enlarged the picture in his mind’s eye and marked the outline in melted wax. “It is a complicated procedure, as it has to be moulded to shape before the wax solidifies,” he adds.
A Class IX student of St.Michael’s School, Ashiq already has a considerable number of works to his credit. He has a special interest in sculpting the figurines of national leaders. Tiny sculptures inside bottles is also his speciality.The last model he made was that of legendary poet Thiruvalluvar to coincide with his birth centenary.
