AITUC Demonstrated

Activists of the All India Trade Union Congress stage a demonstration in Tirupur on Tuesday. More than 2,500 activists of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) were removed by the police when they attempted to stage demonstrations at various places in the district in protest against the decision of the State Government to hand over the administration of the unorganised workers welfare board to the revenue department.


Former MLA Arumugam led the demonstration in the city.

The demonstrators asked the Government to withdraw the Government Order. AITUC activists staged demonstrations at Periyanaickenpalayam, Mettuppalayam, Annur, Koilpalayam, Karamadai, Sulur, Sundarapuram, Kamanaickenpalayam, Avanashi, Palladam, Perur and Pollachi.


In Tirupur, more than 450 activists, 220 women, of AITUC were arrested by the police when they tried to block the road, near old bus stand. Coimbatore district president S. Palanisamy led the demonstration. They said all the works related to the 14 welfare boards constituted by the Government should be entrusted with the Labour Department. Vacancies in the Labour Department should be filled to ensure speedy disposal of petitions. The agitators were released in the afternoon.
