Five projects were taken up in the State under the IIUS. Some of them were in the completion stage. More such clusters should be started to improve the quality of products made by the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), he said. Such infrastructure support not only protected the domestic units in a globalised environment but also helped them compete. However, “we are still lagging behind in innovation.” Pointing out that in overseas countries, industries spent on research and development, he urged the units here to allocate funds for the same.

Elaborating on the progress made by the State in industrial development, he said about 20 special economic zones had been approved for Tamil Nadu. During the last two years, the State had attracted nearly Rs. 17,500 crore foreign direct investments. The State had a separate policy for MSMEs apart from one for larger industries. Coimbatore MP K. Subbarayan said nearly 7.5 lakh micro, small and medium-scale units had downed shutters in the country since 1991. The raw material prices were on the increase and the Centre should take steps to control the prices. Secretary for Small Industries P. Selvam said there were various programmes for cluster development.

The other projects taken up in the State under the IIUS were for garment, leather, foodgrain and auto ancillary units. Industries Commissioner and Director for Industries and Commerce Rajiv Ranjan, said over 1,400 units would benefit from the infrastructure created under the scheme here.
