Corporation Re-designing Traffic Islands

Round abouts and traffic islands across the city are being redesigned and the work is on at the District Sessions Court roundabout on Huzur road in the city on Thursday. Traffic islands and road medians are for regulating the traffic. But in many cases, these islands block the visibility of motorists.

The City Corporation and the police have embarked on a mission to turn these road engineering designs more motorists-friendly besides giving an aesthetic appearance.

In the city, the traffic island near the District Sessions Court and one near the Sungam junction are found to be not motorist-friendly. Earlier, a traffic island on the Savithiri Shanmugam Road that connected Tiruchi Road with Race Course had a traffic island that actually affected the visibility of the motorists on either sides. That island has now been re-designed. Similarly, re-designing of the Lankara Corner junction has also been completed to a considerable extent.

The Corporation with the help of the City Police and private sponsors has started to re-design the traffic island near the District Sessions Court complex. This island is aimed at regulating the flow of traffic from the Arts College Road, Huzur Road, the road branching off from Avanashi Road and the road from Collectorate/Police Commissioner office and Railway Station. The tall iron grills with full of creepers actually affected the visibility of the motorists. The Corporation is now carrying out the job with the help of sponsors. It would have CCTV surveillance cameras monitoring the flow of traffic.
