Abdul Kalam exhorts various sections, including professionals, to be sympathetic to the suffering. His visit to Coimbatore on Wednesday and Friday were marked by a pledge he administered to doctors at two functions organised by hospitals.Apart from the hospital’s doctors, those from other establishments who were invited to this function also stood up and took the pledge. As in the case of Wednesday’s function organised by G. Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial Hospital, the function on Friday also featured two prominent pledges: that doctors would serve at least 20 rural patients a year and that they would not subject patients to unnecessary diagnostic tests.After launching a community service project at Ganga Hospital, Dr. Kalam asked doctors of the hospital to assemble in front of the dais and administered them a pledge.
Referring to a number of tests that doctors prescribe, he said, “I call this inducing diagnostic pain”. To a question later on reducing the cost of diagnosis, Dr. Kalam said doctors want these tests done for a quick diagnosis. “Normally, doctors are God-fearing. They need to find out what can be done in terms of reducing the costs,” he said. To a question on what the country lacks, he said it had good human resources, natural resources and bio-diversity. What, however, was lacking was confidence.Everyone must have the “I-can-do-it” spirit. The country, he said, should become an economic super power without compromising on ethics.
