Global Campaign For The Conservation Of Wildlife

Nature Club members of the Sri Shakthi Institute of Engineering and Technology at a meeting in the college. Students of the Sri Shakthi Institute of Engineering and Technology have joined the global campaign for the conservation of wildlife. The college has formed a Nature Club that will undertake activities to protect biodiversity.
It will collaborate with WWF-India, an organisation working for biodiversity conservation.

Some of the proposed activities of the nature club include forming a rural wild life library within the campus, planting medicinal and ever-green species, setting up a bio-composting unit on the college premises and organising nature club camps for the club members in sanctuaries. The WWF will provide support in terms of technical inputs to the club members, says T. Dheepan, secretary of the institute. More than 350 students and three faculty have already joined the club, he adds.

“Environmental Science is one of the subjects for the students in their second semester. By forming a nature club, they can directly involve in conservation activities and even enjoy the experience of field work.” With help from WWF India, the college plans to organise camps at bio-reserves in and around the city, which will facilitate better understanding of wildlife and conservation practices in existence. “The activities of the nature club will not interfere with the students’ academic interest. It will only help them be aware of nature and wildlife conservation,” he adds. The WWF India has been collaborating with various schools in their nature club activities.

It offers a platform for conducting nature trails, exhibitions, tree-planting and nature camps. It works towards the popularisation of energy conservation and pollution control. It also helps member schools and institutions to organise outdoor education workshops and nature camps. In addition, the organisation helps nature clubs in colleges and communities carry out their projects. The students are asked to take up interesting activities such as assisting in biodiversity mapping and wildlife census. It assists colleges in conducting inter-college workshops on conservation biology and environmental sciences. WWF-India involves other professional and cultural associations, labour unions, academic institutions, media, environmental movements and non-governmental organisations in their activities.
