Hogenekkal Water Project - Facts

Project Name: Hogenekkal Drinking Water & Saniation Project
Project Cost: Rs. 1,334 Crores
Execution Agency: Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board
Funding Agency: Japan Bank for International Cooperation
Planned Water Usage: 1.4 tmcft (thousand million cubic feet)
Water Supply : 160 million litres a day to 40.4 lakh people
Beneficieres: Dharmapuri & Salem Districts. It will cover three municipalities, 17 town panchayats and 6,755 rural habitations in this two districts.

Project Details:
» Headworks at Hogenekkal, Entry point of Cauvery River in Tamil Nadu.

» Then water will be pumped to Master Reservoier, which is located at Madam with Water treatment Plant.

» The total length of 6,945 km of the conveying main, water will be pumped for 145 km to cover areas such as Palacode, Marandahalli and Hosur.

» Tamil Nadu Electricity Board will provide uninterrupted supply of 30 megawatt. For the remaining areas, water will be conveyed through gravity.


No Objection Clearence:
1998, Karnataka agreed to abide by the conditions imposed by the Union Water Resources Ministry if Tamil Nadu withdrew its objections to the Cauvery water being used to augment supply to Bangalore, according to the minutes of a meeting convened by the Union Secretary (Water Resources) and attended by officers of the Cauvery basin States on drinking water supply schemes of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu on June 29, 1998.


Project Status:
» Mr. Karunanidhi laid the foundation stone for the project on February 26.

» On March 16, The Japan Bank for International Cooperation will enter into a loan agreement with the Union Government in March for the project. The bank’s officials informed about the decision to assist the project at a meeting with the Local Administration Minister, Mr M.K. Stalin, in Tokyo.


Current Issue:
» Former Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa organised a stir at Hogenakkal against the project.

» On March 27, the Tamil Nadu Assembly adopted a resolution, urging the Centre to extend “full cooperation and help” in executing the project.
