The public meeting, addressed, among others, by party general secretary Prakash Karat, Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury and Chief Ministers Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee (West Bengal), V.S. Achuthanandan (Kerala) and Manik Sarkar (Tripura) was to have begun on the conclusion of the rally. But, with cadres continuing to pour in from various parts, especially Tamil Nadu and Kerala, there was no sign of the rally ending before the public meeting.

Mr. Karat and Mr. Achuthanandan left for the meeting, leaving the task of taking the salute from the cadres in the rally to Polit Bureau members Brinda Karat, S. Ramachandran Pillai, Biman Basu, Pinnarayi Vijayan and other party leaders. They cheered the marching cadres from a stage put up on Dr. Nanjappa Road.A brigade of boy volunteers was cheered by party supporters when it made its way towards the V.O.C. Grounds, venue of the public meeting. Traffic regulations were made to facilitate traffic on one side of the road and the rally on the other.

Party supporters and onlookers clambered on to medians and compound walls to get a clear view of the rally. Some of the supporters from Kerala had come with party flag painted on their face. Mr. Karat mentioned at the meeting that the rally not concluding even at 9 p.m. only pointed out that the party was growing in Tamil Nadu.
