Workshop For Disability Management

The programmes of the Government are best implemented only when the officials meet people in the rural areas directly, said Sandeep Khanna, Additional Secretary, Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. Inaugurating a workshop organised recently by the Faculty of Disability Management and Special Education of Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University for the service providers for special children, he called upon the Government officials to make regular visits to the villages and talk to the people with disabilities.

According to a release from the university, he asserted that such visits would bridge the communication gap and help sensitise the persons involved at the grassroots level. The Rehabilitation Council of India Act, Persons with Disabilities Act and the National Trust Act, focused on the education, employment, rehabilitation and empowerment of the disabled. However, the disabled were often marginalised in the country. They should be given the right to enjoy the same status as the normal public.

They should also be entrusted with responsibility. Swami Atmaramananda, Administrative Head of Faculty of Disability Management and Special Education, and Secretary, Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya, pointed out that the NGOs should be given more autonomy for the successful implementation of Government programmes. The students completing Special Education courses were not allowed to register in employment exchanges. If inclusive education was to be successful, this anomaly had to be sorted out, he pleaded.
