Farmers Propaganda Yatra

The Tamilaga Vivasayigal Sangham has decided to conduct a propaganda yatra on June 1 highlighting the ill-effects of the proposed bypass road to Mettupalayam. The second phase of the agitation would be a demonstration in front of Red Cross Society building on Huzur Road in the second week of July, a release from the president of the Sangham, M.R. Sivasamy, said in a release here on Wednesday.

The proposed bypass road from Neelambur bypass road to Mettupalayam road announced by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) would involve acquisition of 1,000 acres of agricultural land. With the road cutting across the agricultural lands, farmers would be forced to give up cultivation in close to 4,000 acres of land. Mr. Sivasamy suggested that the existing Mettupalayam Road was having 100 ft width except at one or two places. The space available on either side of the existing Mettupalayam Road was sufficient for putting up a four-lane road with centre median. Such a work would actually make the Neelambur bypass road unnecessary.
